Are you a helper going on an interview with employers? Don’t worry, you’ll do great! We’ve put together some tips for a successful interview.

Tip #1 — Show up on time!

At White Glove, we’ll schedule an interview for you at the potential employer’s home or at our office. We’ll give you plenty of notice, and send you an email reminder of the time. However, it is your responsibility to make it to the interview on time and be ready to shine! Google search the address, or click on the link in the email we sent for the address. Get directions from Google Maps. Scout the location ahead of time if you can. Arriving on time makes the employer think you are serious about the job and you can follow the very first task they have given you, which is to arrive on time. Make this your priority and show your potential employer that you are the kind of person that will take their job seriously. It always makes a good impression to be there on time.

Tip #2 — Prepare in advance

Before you go to the interview, think about what questions the employer will likely ask you. At White Glove, we will share with you some information about the employer. If they have children, they will likely ask you about your experience with this. Think of some examples in advance of some great things you did with kids at your last employer’s. Did you plan play dates? Did you take the kids to school? Can you pack a lunch and make sure their backpacks are ready for the next day? Think of all the things you do to make it easier for your employer, so you’ll be ready when they ask you these questions. If they are looking for a passionate cook, think of your favorite recipes. Take photos of some of the food you have prepared so you can show off your skills. Do they have a special diet? Look up how to cook the foods they like. Do they have pets? Do some research on caring for animals. You want to be well prepared for the interview so they can see your best side!

Tip #3 — Make eye contact and be honest

When you interview with an employer, they want to see your personality shine. Make eye contact with them, smile, and relax! You’ve got this! Answer their questions honestly. It’s ok to disagree or say no to a request. The employer is looking for honesty from you as much as you would like honesty from them.

Tip #4 — Don’t overshare!

While it is good to be honest in your interview, you want to put your best foot forward as well. Don’t tell a long sob story, and don’t go into too much detail about your personal life. An employer is wanting someone drama free, so leave your drama at home and only give a brief answer when asked about a difficult situation. Be professional in your answers. Don’t say bad things about your former employers. For example, if your last employers were going through a nasty divorce, you can simply say they were fighting and you didn’t want to be in that situation anymore. No need to give details. The employer will see that you are able to be discreet with their personal lives and they will appreciate this about you. If you tell too many details, they will worry that you will tell the neighbors their personal drama, and nobody wants the neighbors to know their secrets!

Tip #5 — Ask questions

If the employer asks you if you have any questions, now is the time to get your questions answered. Some good questions to ask include asking why their former helper left. Ask details about the job, such as working hours, and what time they expect you to get up in the morning. If they have special requests or diets, ask them about how you can help them with their special needs. You can ask them how they will train you to do the job and when they need someone to start. You can ask them about pay and benefits, such as will they offer wifi, and will you be required to work on your day off. Remember, an interview is just as much about whether you like the employer as it is about whether they like you, so this is your opportunity to find out about them.
