Did you know that if you are a married woman in Singapore and you are working and have hired a helper, you can apply for tax relief?
Who qualifies?
To qualify for tax relief, you must meet the following requirements:
Your income must be earned (like salary from a job), not passive income.
You must be either married and live with your husband, or married and your husband is not a tax resident of Singapore, or separated from your husband, divorced or widowed and had children who lived with you and on whom you could claim child reliefs.
You or your husband employed the helper and paid the levy.
Why is this given?
Singapore is encouraging married women to stay in the work force. This is why singles and married men are not eligible for the relief.
How do I apply?
Login to mytaxportal and go to Individuals > File tax return. Select "File" to file a tax return. Go to “4. Deductions, Tax Reliefs and Rebates”. Select “Add New” > “Foreign Domestic Worker Levy”. Fill in the relevant information and select “Update”.
If you have been granted the relief before, you will automatically be granted it in subsequent years.
How much can I claim?
You can claim twice the amount of levy you paid. For example, if you are a foreigner and you paid $300/month for 12 months, or $3600 for the year, you can claim $7,200.
